Same-sex marriages cannot be divorced in Hong Kong

As LGBTQ relationships gain greater social acceptance worldwide, there is a noticeable increase in the demand for legal recognition of these relationships in Hong Kong. While Hong Kong courts ruled last year that it is necessary for the recognition of same-sex partnerships and the granting of housing benefits to same-sex couples, it is still unclear what it means for the future of the LGBTQ+ community.

Sarina Cheung recently spoke with “Bucket of Gold” on Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) about the challenges that are faced by same-sex couples in terms of wealth planning and taxation issues, what happens when they are unable to divorce in Hong Kong, and how the recent rulings could potentially resolve these problems.
