When it comes to divorce or separation, people are more likely hold the opinion that mothers are usually favoured over fathers when matters concerning child contact and child custody arise, as according to societal norms, fathers are usually expected to work, while mothers look after the children.

In an interview with the South China Morning Post’s Young Post, Rita Ku discussed how Hong Kong’s cultural background may have impacted the legal system’s handling of child custody cases, which tend to favor mothers over fathers because they are traditionally viewed as “better carers”. Rita also shared that fathers sometimes have to fight harder in court for custody, underscoring the need for an equal starting point among both parents.
